Cada vez que viajo desde el aeropuerto de Los \u00c1ngeles - LAX, no puedo evitar deslumbrarme por el Theme Building. Es algo que no puedo explicar con palabras. Una cosa es verlo en fotos, otra es contemplarlo ah\u00ed mismo, ante tus ojos. Parece sacado de una pel\u00edcula de ciencia ficci\u00f3n, lo cual no es del todo falso. Se rumorea que William Pereira, uno de los arquitectos principales, influenciado por su hermano Hal, director art\u00edstico de la pel\u00edcula cl\u00e1sica de 1954 La Guerra de los Mundos<\/i>, podr\u00eda haber planeado que el Theme Building pareciera una nave espacial aterrizando.<\/p>

El Theme Building es una estructura que representa la arquitectura Googie en su m\u00e1xima expresi\u00f3n. Posee las l\u00edneas limpias del modernismo de mediados de siglo con un toque futurista, lo cual era la visi\u00f3n de esa \u00e9poca. Esta maravilla arquitect\u00f3nica, parte del proyecto de la terminal del aeropuerto LAX, se construy\u00f3 entre 1960 y 1961.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

El dise\u00f1o original del Theme Building fue ideado por James Langenheim y desarrollado por el equipo de Pereira & Luckman Associates. Hubo otros dos estudios de arquitectura, Welton Becket and Associates y Paul Revere Williams, que estuvieron involucrados en el dise\u00f1o total del aeropuerto LAX, pero no participaron activamente en este edificio espec\u00edficamente.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

El dise\u00f1o inicial del LAX constaba de edificios sat\u00e9lite conectados a una gigantesca y futurista c\u00fapula de cristal conformada por conchas, en el centro del aeropuerto. Richard Bradshaw fue el ingeniero estructural por ser la persona m\u00e1s calificada para este tipo de estructura. Tras la reducci\u00f3n del proyecto, el Theme Building se situ\u00f3 donde se habr\u00eda ubicado la c\u00fapula de cristal. El contratista general fue Robert E. Esta fue la primera vez que se utilizaron arcos de acero con soportes gigantes, incluyendo las patas horizontales que los unen al n\u00facleo central en forma de c\u00edrculo del edificio. Unas estructuras de acero huecas, revestidas de estuco, crean la ilusi\u00f3n de que las patas est\u00e1n unidas. Se utilizaron aproximadamente 900 toneladas de acero estructural para todo el edificio. Los arcos se transportaron a la obra en camiones durante las horas de poco tr\u00e1fico debido al tama\u00f1o de las piezas. En el centro de la estructura, el Theme Building albergaba un restaurante elevado con paredes de cristal. Al principio, el restaurante giraba lentamente, ofreciendo una imponente vista panor\u00e1mica de 360\u00b0. M\u00e1s tarde dej\u00f3 de rotar, pero la gente a\u00fan pod\u00eda disfrutar de la vista. En la azotea del restaurante hab\u00eda una plataforma de observaci\u00f3n abierta que tambi\u00e9n ofrec\u00eda las mismas vistas, para que los comensales y otros visitantes pudieran disfrutar viendo los aviones despegar y aterrizar. En 1993, el Theme Building fue designado Monumento Hist\u00f3rico-Cultural (N\u00famero 570) por la Ciudad de Los \u00c1ngeles. Posteriormente, el edificio fue remodelado para albergar al Encounter <\/i>restaurante, <\/i>un proyecto liderado por el departamento de Imagineering de Walt Disney, que le dio un interior de tem\u00e1tica retro y una iluminaci\u00f3n renovada en 1997.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

El dise\u00f1o fue hecho con la intenci\u00f3n de reflejar una est\u00e9tica futurista, creando una experiencia que reflejaba tanto la arquitectura del edificio como la emoci\u00f3n de los viajes a\u00e9reos a finales del siglo XX. Una de las caracter\u00edsticas m\u00e1s destacadas del dise\u00f1o del restaurante fue el amplio comedor circular, los colores vibrantes, los acabados cromados y las formas geom\u00e9tricas, todo lo cual contribu\u00eda a la sensaci\u00f3n de un ambiente elegante y futurista. El mobiliario era una mezcla de piezas contempor\u00e1neas, muchas de las cuales incorporaban l\u00edneas suaves y curvas que complementaban las formas org\u00e1nicas del exterior del edificio. La terraza de observaci\u00f3n se cerr\u00f3 por razones de seguridad tras los atentados del 11 de septiembre. Unos seis a\u00f1os despu\u00e9s, un enorme trozo de estuco de 500 kg (1100 libras) se desprendi\u00f3 de uno de los arcos sobre el restaurante. Este incidente desencaden\u00f3 un proyecto de tres a\u00f1os para reparar y reforzar el edificio contra los sismos.<\/p>

Los arquitectos, Gin Wong Associates, Tower General Contractors y el administrador del proyecto, Jaime Garza, de Miyamoto International, asumieron el reto de lograr que el edificio fuera a prueba de sismos. El Dr. R. Nigbor, de NEES-UCLA, fue responsable de las pruebas de campo y el an\u00e1lisis de datos.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

La estrategia de modernizaci\u00f3n convencional hubiese alterado la apariencia del Theme Building, por lo que este equipo ide\u00f3 una idea vanguardista que ayudar\u00eda al edificio a resistir un terremoto sin alterar su dise\u00f1o original. Instalaron un amortiguador de masa de 600 toneladas de acero en la estructura central, sobre cojinetes de goma que ayudaban a controlar el movimiento. Adem\u00e1s, se instalaron ocho amortiguadores de fluido viscoso para absorber el movimiento del acero y contrarrestar el movimiento s\u00edsmico. Las 600 toneladas se dividen en 22 capas (seis placas de acero cada una). Tras la finalizaci\u00f3n de esta gigantesca obra, el Restaurante Encounter reabri\u00f3 sus puertas con gran inter\u00e9s p\u00fablico. Sin embargo, con el tiempo dej\u00f3 de ser una novedad y cerr\u00f3 definitivamente en 2013. La principal causa fue su ubicaci\u00f3n, inconvenientemente alejada de los puntos de chequeo seguridad para los viajeros y de la ciudad de Los \u00c1ngeles. El piso de observaci\u00f3n reabri\u00f3 al p\u00fablico los s\u00e1bados y domingos, y en la planta baja se instal\u00f3 un nuevo monumento conmemorativo a las v\u00edctimas del 11de septiembre.<\/p>

Desde el 2018, los militares de la USO Bob Hope del Sur y Centro de California se trasladaron a la planta baja del Theme Building. El centro, que duplic\u00f3 el tama\u00f1o del antiguo espacio de la USO del aeropuerto ha atendido a unos 8500 militares y sus familias cada mes.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t
