Habiendo crecido en la era de las grandes y elegantes agencias de viajes, era inevitable quedar cautivada con todo ese ambiente sofisticado y fascinante. Antes de las reservas en l\u00ednea y las aplicaciones m\u00f3viles, las agencias de viajes ten\u00edan enormes vidrieras, aviones a escala colgando de los techos y bell\u00edsimos afiches que adornaban las paredes. Y tengo que admitir que los carteles de Varig eran del otro mundo.<\/p>

Audaces, coloridos, llenos de vida, no solo vend\u00edan pasajes, vend\u00edan la promesa de aventuras incre\u00edbles. Detr\u00e1s de esas obras de arte estaba Nelson Jungbluth, el cerebro creativo del departamento de publicidad de Varig. \u00c9l no era solo un ilustrador, era todo un visionario, un artista que ayud\u00f3 a definir la identidad visual de Varig, la querida aerol\u00ednea bandera de Brasil, durante sus a\u00f1os m\u00e1s emblem\u00e1ticos.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Nelson Jungbluth naci\u00f3 en Taquara, en el sure\u00f1o estado de Rio Grande do Sul, Brasil, en 1921. \u00c9l creci\u00f3 rodeado de c\u00e1maras y creatividad ya que sus padres eran fot\u00f3grafos. As\u00ed que se podr\u00eda decir que llevaba en la sangre el arte de contar historias con im\u00e1genes. Comenz\u00f3 a ilustrar en su adolescencia, haciendo trabajos por cuenta propia para una empresa local de muebles, donde dise\u00f1aba bocetos y anuncios publicitarios.<\/p>

A los 18 a\u00f1os, Jungbluth empac\u00f3 sus maletas y se fue a R\u00edo de Janeiro en busca del sue\u00f1o de convertirse en dibujante de historietas. Consigui\u00f3 trabajo en Suplemento Juvenil y, m\u00e1s adelante, en O Guri, dos de las revistas de tiras c\u00f3micas m\u00e1s influyentes de Brasil en aquella \u00e9poca.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Su gran oportunidad lleg\u00f3 en 1946, cuando se uni\u00f3 al equipo de publicidad de Varig y comenz\u00f3 a definir un estilo visual audaz, moderno y, sin lugar a dudas, brasile\u00f1o. Unos a\u00f1os despu\u00e9s, hizo una breve incursi\u00f3n en la publicidad comercial con la agencia Standard Propaganda, aunque nunca dej\u00f3 de colaborar con la aerol\u00ednea. En 1952 decidi\u00f3 participar en un concurso nacional de afiches de Varig y obtuvo el tercer lugar. Ese reconocimiento lo llev\u00f3 de vuelta a la aerol\u00ednea a trabajar tiempo completo en 1954 y estuvo con ellos hasta 1974.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

Antes de que Jungbluth se sumara al equipo, los calendarios y afiches de Varig eran en su mayor\u00eda fotograf\u00edas. Eran ciertamente bonitos, pero no memorables. Cuando \u00e9l asumi\u00f3 la direcci\u00f3n del Departamento de Arte de la aerol\u00ednea, introdujo ilustraciones vibrantes, dibujadas a mano, que rivalizaban con lo mejor de Pan Am, BOAC o Air France.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Una de sus contribuciones m\u00e1s impresionantes fue convertir los afiches y calendarios de Varig en verdaderas obras de arte coleccionables. No eran simples folletos promocionales, estos eran impresos como serigraf\u00edas<\/i>, una t\u00e9cnica bastante vanguardista para la \u00e9poca, que les daba una textura y una profundidad de color impresionantes. La gente no solo los ve\u00edan, los guardaban, los enmarcaban, los admiraban.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Y no podemos olvidar la Rosa dos Ventos (Rosa de los Vientos), esa preciosa br\u00fajula estilizada que se convirti\u00f3 en el emblema de la identidad visual de Varig. Jungbluth la dise\u00f1\u00f3 en 1954, aunque no comenz\u00f3 a aparecer en los aviones hasta 1961. Sin embargo, una vez que lo hizo, estaba en todas partes: en los estabilizadores de cola, en los sobres de boletos, en los anuncios, etc. La Rosa dos Ventos se convirti\u00f3 en un s\u00edmbolo de elegancia en movimiento, y en una pieza central de la estrategia de marca global de Varig.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

M\u00e1s adelante, como muchos de los grandes de su generaci\u00f3n, decidi\u00f3 dar un giro a su carrera y convertirse en artista a tiempo completo. Las exposiciones de Jungbluth fueron desde Porto Alegre hasta importantes galer\u00edas del extranjero, aunque siempre encontraba tiempo para dise\u00f1ar alg\u00fan afiche, calendario o piezas conmemorativas para eventos especiales y empresas.<\/p>

La obra de Jungbluth captura todo lo que hizo de la Era de los Jets algo tan m\u00e1gico. As\u00ed que, si alguna vez te cruzas con un calendario o afiche vintage de Varig, detente y obs\u00e9rvalo con atenci\u00f3n.
