Las torres de tr\u00e1fico de control a\u00e9reo son una de esas cosas que no puedes dejar de ver al acercarte a un aeropuerto, pero que al mismo tiempo suelen pasarse por alto. Se alzan como altos centinelas sobre las pistas, vigilando mientras los aviones van y vienen. Sin embargo, cuando supe que I. M. Ieoh Ming Pei (1917\u20132019) fue un arquitecto chino-estadounidense reconocido por su elegante integraci\u00f3n de los principios modernistas con formas geom\u00e9tricas precisas. Nacido en Guangzhou y criado en Shangh\u00e1i, Pei se mud\u00f3 a los Estados Unidos a los 17 a\u00f1os. Tras estudiar en MIT y en la Harvard Graduate School of Design, donde trabaj\u00f3 m\u00e1s tarde junto a Walter Gropius y Marcel Breuer del movimiento Bauhaus en Alemania, Pei desarroll\u00f3 una prol\u00edfica carrera de m\u00e1s de seis d\u00e9cadas que fue reconocida no solo por el p\u00fablico, sino tambi\u00e9n con numerosos premios prestigiosos.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

En 1955, cuando Pei fund\u00f3 su propia firma, I.M. Pei & Associates, se hizo conocido por grandes proyectos p\u00fablicos y culturales, entre ellos el National Gallery of Art\u2019s East Building en Washington D.C., el Terminal Sundrome en New York, la Torre del Banco de China en Hong Kong, y por supuesto, la famosa Pir\u00e1mide del Louvre en Par\u00eds (im\u00e1genes arriba). A finales de los a\u00f1os 60 y principios de los 70, los Estados Unidos segu\u00eda viviendo bajo el brillo de la era de los jets. El transporte a\u00e9reo hab\u00eda crecido r\u00e1pidamente despu\u00e9s de la Segunda Guerra Mundial, y los aeropuertos necesitaban crecer con \u00e9l. La Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) se dio cuenta de que sus torres de control de tr\u00e1fico a\u00e9reo eran inconsistentes en dise\u00f1o y, a menudo, estaban obsoletas.<\/p>

La empresa de Pei cre\u00f3 13 variaciones para que la FAA pudiera combinar y adaptar las caracter\u00edsticas b\u00e1sicas seg\u00fan las necesidades de cada aeropuerto. Su equipo de dise\u00f1o estableci\u00f3 cinco alturas b\u00e1sicas de los ejes de concreto, entre 60 y 120 pies. La torre prototipo de 150 pies en el Chicago O\u2019Hare International Airport fue la excepci\u00f3n.<\/p>

Las torres ten\u00edan una cabina pentagonal con un solo vidrio en las esquinas para aumentar la visibilidad. Dentro de las cabinas, que ven\u00edan en dos tama\u00f1os, los controladores trabajaban en una consola unificada dise\u00f1ada teniendo en cuenta su l\u00ednea de visi\u00f3n. Se decidi\u00f3 ubicar las torres lejos de las terminales para mejorar la visibilidad de los controladores en la cabina, y los equipos y salas de radares se colocaron en la base subterr\u00e1nea. El contrato inicial contemplaba alrededor de 70 torres, pero s\u00f3lo 16 fueron realmente construidas por razones desconocidas. Encontr\u00e9 una entrada en un foro que enumera 13 de ellas:<\/p>

Para Pei, los prototipos de las torres de Air Traffic Control no trataban de crear un monumento emblem\u00e1tico como un museo o un memorial. Lo que las vincula con su otra obra es la geometr\u00eda clara, la precisi\u00f3n y el dise\u00f1o innovador. Para \u00e9l y su equipo, fue una oportunidad para aportar orden y claridad a un sistema nacional en crecimiento. Se inspir\u00f3 en la funcionalidad, la modularidad y la idea de la arquitectura como herramienta para el progreso. En muchos sentidos, esto coincid\u00eda con el esp\u00edritu mismo de la aviaci\u00f3n.
