El Aula Magna es un lugar que me conecta profundamente con mi juventud y con mi herencia cultural. Como venezolana y especialmente habiendo nacido en Caracas, esta sala ha sido parte de mi vida desde mi ni\u00f1ez. La sala en s\u00ed es un espect\u00e1culo, hay una combinaci\u00f3n casi m\u00e1gica de elementos la que hacen muy especial. Estoy consciente de que el Aula Magna se construy\u00f3 antes de la era del jet, sin embargo, al igual que muchos otros edificios de estilo moderno de mediados de siglo, posee suficientes elementos que sirvieron de inspiraci\u00f3n y base para futuros conceptos de dise\u00f1o propios de aquella \u00e9poca.<\/p>

Voy a empezar contando un poco de su historia para entender por qu\u00e9 fue y sigue siendo un lugar extraordinario\u2026 Esta sala es parte de la Universidad Central de Venezuela (UCV), declarada Patrimonio Mundial de la Humanidad el 30 de noviembre de 2000 por la UNESCO. Cuando se propuso inicialmente la construcci\u00f3n de la Universidad Central de Venezuela, el gobierno envi\u00f3 delegados a diferentes universidades internacionales para conseguir ideas y para entender todo lo que implicaba un proyecto tan ambicioso. Entre los modelos de universidades que visitaron, escogieron el modelo del campus<\/i> inspirado en la propuesta Socr\u00e1tica de incluir las artes y el deporte en el estudio acad\u00e9mico.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

El arquitecto en jefe fue Carlos Ra\u00fal Villanueva, uno de los m\u00e1s relevantes de la historia contempor\u00e1nea de Venezuela. Villanueva naci\u00f3 en el Reino Unido en 1900; su madre era francesa y su padre era venezolano. Estudi\u00f3 arquitectura en la \u00c9cole Nationale Sup\u00e9rieure des Beaux-Arts de Par\u00eds en 1922, y luego estudi\u00f3 urbanismo en la Universit\u00e9 de Paris en 1937.<\/p>

Cuando Villanueva se residenci\u00f3 en Venezuela trabaj\u00f3 al principio en el desarrollo de proyectos de urbanismo residencial como El Silencio, El 23 de enero, El Para\u00edso y el Cerro Piloto. Aparte de dise\u00f1ar la UCV, tambi\u00e9n tuvo diversas comisiones en las que se cuentan museos, colegios y hasta el Pabell\u00f3n de Venezuela en la Expo 1967 de Montreal, Canad\u00e1.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

Despu\u00e9s de completar la UCV, Villanueva colabor\u00f3 con la creaci\u00f3n de la Escuela de Arquitectura y Urbanismo. Despu\u00e9s se convirti\u00f3 en profesor de Historia de la Arquitectura y Urbanismo, posici\u00f3n que le dio el t\u00edtulo de El Maestro<\/em>.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

La construcci\u00f3n del Aula Magna fue realizada en solo cuatro meses. Este fue un tiempo record considerando la complejidad del dise\u00f1o del edificio y todos los elementos t\u00e9cnicos en su interior que exig\u00edan un nivel de precisi\u00f3n muy avanzado. La compa\u00f1\u00eda designada para la construcci\u00f3n fue \u201cChristiani & Neilsen\u201d de Dinamarca. La sala fue oficialmente inaugurada el 2 de marzo de 1954, con la apertura de la X Conferencia Iberoamericana de Jefes de Estado y Gobierno.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

El Aula Magna puede alojar 2.696 espectadores (1.722 en patio, 961 en los balcones laterales y 13 en el Palco de Honor). Algunos asientos pueden ser removidos para adaptar el espacio dependiendo del tipo de evento.\u00a0<\/span>Tambi\u00e9n tiene siete puertas de acceso para el patio y cinco para el balc\u00f3n a trav\u00e9s de dos sistemas de rampas.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

La estructura del edificio consta de 691 pilotes de concreto armado de 18 metros (59 pies) de longitud, con acabados en obra limpia compuesta de un p\u00f3rtico a modo de viga Vierendeel. Esta estructura met\u00e1lica de 100 toneladas descansa sobre peque\u00f1as columnas en forma de abanico, donde est\u00e1 suspendido el techo falso de yeso. La cubierta de concreto vaciado en forma de concha tiene espesor de 8 cm (3.14 pulgadas), y los apoyos para distribuir su peso se dise\u00f1aron para evitar vibraciones. Los ecos se controlaron en la parte posterior de la sala utilizando detalles de madera y yeso.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Durante los a\u00f1os de estudios en Francia, Villanueva tuvo la oportunidad de conocer a arquitectos y artistas de los movimientos de vanguardia de los a\u00f1os 20, lo cual explica su afinidad a las artes y la integraci\u00f3n de \u00e9stas en sus proyectos, especialmente en la UCV.<\/p>

Con esta premisa \u00e9l incluy\u00f3 elementos art\u00edsticos en todas las maneras posibles dentro de la universidad. En algunos casos con las fachadas de los edificios, en otros con la incorporaci\u00f3n de esculturas y murales que dinamizaban y complementaban el dise\u00f1o arquitect\u00f3nico. Este concepto fue definido como la S\u00edntesis de las Artes<\/i>donde todo converge.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

En el Aula Magna las artes fueron integradas como parte del edificio mismo. La Plaza Cubierta, area alrededor del edificio, fue concebida como un museo al aire libre por las condiciones clim\u00e1ticas de Caracas. En este espacio habitan obras de arte de artistas reconocidos, entre las que se pueden mencionar esculturas de Jean Arp, Henri Laurens, y Victor Vasarely. Tambi\u00e9n se encuentran murales sin t\u00edtulo de los artistas Mateo Manaure, Victor Vasarely, Pascual Navarro, Fernand L\u00e9ger y Carlos Gonz\u00e1lez Bongen.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

En alg\u00fan momento, este lugar fue catalogado como una de las cinco salas con mejor ac\u00fastica del mundo. Sin embargo, cuando fue finalizada presentaba problemas graves con la ac\u00fastica y Villanueva no quer\u00eda modificar el dise\u00f1o original del auditorio. Entonces, Bolt, Beranek y Newman, compa\u00f1\u00eda a cargo de la ac\u00fastica, propuso corregir el problema con la instalaci\u00f3n de pantallas colgantes. Villanueva ya hab\u00eda comisionado a Alexander Calder, artista renombrado y amigo personal de \u00e9l, a crear un m\u00f3vil para la Plaza Cubierta, ubicaci\u00f3n que tra\u00eda muchos retos por tener fuertes vientos cruzados. En su lugar, Villanueva propuso instalar el m\u00f3vil de Calder dentro de la sala para corregir el problema. Calder acept\u00f3 y consider\u00f3 las especificaciones t\u00e9cnicas de los paneles para crear su obra Nubes Flotantes<\/i>. Esta magn\u00edfica pieza consta de 31 paneles en total (22 en el techo, 5 en la pared lateral derecha y 4 en la pared lateral izquierda). Las nubes est\u00e1n construidas con una armaz\u00f3n de acero recubierto por madera contra-enchapada de 1.27cm (1\/2 pulgada) de espesor, la m\u00e1s grande tiene un \u00e1rea de 80m\u00b2 (861.1 pies cuadrados) y un peso de aproximadamente 2,5 toneladas. Cada nube est\u00e1 suspendida con unos cables met\u00e1licos que las sostienen desde el techo falso de yeso, d\u00e1ndole la inclinaci\u00f3n y la altura necesaria dependiendo de su tama\u00f1o y ubicaci\u00f3n. Inicialmente, las nubes pod\u00edan ajustar a diferentes posiciones dependiendo de los requerimientos t\u00e9cnicos el evento, pero eventualmente se hizo una calibraci\u00f3n permanente con el acompa\u00f1amiento de una orquesta en vivo para asegurar su precisi\u00f3n.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Adem\u00e1s de la obra de Calder, el Aula Magna integr\u00f3 otros elementos para optimizar la ac\u00fastica. La parte interna de las puertas son de metal perforado y rellenas de aislante, para que el sonido no se proyecte hacia afuera y viceversa.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

Las butacas, a su vez, tienen perforaciones en su parte inferior que quedan al descubierto cuando est\u00e1n retra\u00eddas. \u00c9stas est\u00e1n tapizadas con lana de oveja utilizando un tejido surcado, y tambi\u00e9n est\u00e1n rellenas con ovillos del mismo material. Estos dos elementos combinados en las butacas contrarrestan la ausencia de personas cuando el aula est\u00e1 parcialmente llena. La caracter\u00edstica m\u00e1s t\u00e9cnica del sistema de iluminaci\u00f3n es que estaba conectada a un aparato tipo \u00f3rgano llamado Strand Light Console manufacturado por UK John Compton Organ Company en sociedad con The Strand Electric. Este funcionaba presionando diferentes secuencias en las teclas, incluyendo partituras, resultando en varios efectos de iluminaci\u00f3n. Como la tecnolog\u00eda todav\u00eda no estaba automatizada en aquel entonces, hab\u00eda un t\u00e9cnico que realizaba todos los efectos en vivo. Esto puede no parecer importante ahora, pero era muy avanzado para los a\u00f1os 50. El Aula Magna fue concebida como un espacio flexible donde se pudiesen presentar diversos eventos como conciertos, conferencias, simposium, etc. Por eso fue instalado un sistema de comunicaci\u00f3n que permit\u00eda hacer traducciones simult\u00e1neas en los eventos que lo requiriera. Dicho sistema ten\u00eda diferentes canales dependiendo del idioma. El conector para los auriculares se encontraba en la parte frontal de los apoyabrazos, sistema muy parecido a los de los aviones comerciales en a\u00f1os posteriores. Restaurando el legado<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Como consecuencia de la falta de financiamiento de las universidades e instituciones que no se alineaban con los valores del gobierno que ha estado en el poder desde 1998, y la extrema crisis financiera que el pa\u00eds ha sufrido, result\u00f3 en la falta de financiamiento p\u00fablico y privado. Desafortunadamente, el Aula Magna cay\u00f3 en un estado severo de deterioro.<\/p>

M\u00e1s tarde, en el 2021 naci\u00f3 el proyecto Aula Magna 300. La meta era de recaudar $300.000 para resolver los problemas principales. Esta iniciativa fue liderada por la Direcci\u00f3n de Cultura de la UCV, y apoyada por los estudiantes actuales y graduados. No he conseguido ninguna informaci\u00f3n acerca de qu\u00e9 sucedi\u00f3 con este proyecto. Sin embargo, en el mismo a\u0144o, el presidente de Venezuela acept\u00f3 crear una comisi\u00f3n especial para rescatar el campus completo, y en abril del 2022 el Aula Magna Se someti\u00f3 a una restauraci\u00f3n integral que dur\u00f3 casi tres a\u00f1os. La renovaci\u00f3n abarc\u00f3 desde la reparaci\u00f3n de elementos estructurales y ambientales hasta las manijas de las puertas y los detalles decorativos. Afortunadamente, el edificio fue restaurado con \u00e9xito a su antiguo esplendor, aun preservando la mayor\u00eda de sus caracter\u00edsticas originales.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

El Aula Magna de la Universidad Central de Venezuela es mucho m\u00e1s que una sala de conciertos or un \u00edcono cultural. A trav\u00e9s de la visi\u00f3n de Villanueva de la S\u00edntesis de las Artes<\/i>, la sala se convirti\u00f3 en un espacio donde la arquitectura y la expresi\u00f3n art\u00edstica coexisten en armon\u00eda. La resistencia de Villanueva de separar la belleza de la funcionalidad dice mucho acerca de la filosof\u00eda que molde\u00f3 cada esquina de este espacio. Para los venezolanos, especialmente los caraque\u00f1os, el Aula Magna tiene una importancia que va m\u00e1s all\u00e1 de la designaci\u00f3n de la UNESCO o su lugar en la historia de la arquitectura, es un s\u00edmbolo de orgullo, recuerdos y herencia cultural.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t
